Battle Day

Thirty-six highly competitive teams from 11 San Fernando Valley middle schools gathered on March 20 to compete with each other on their knowledge of 31 books each team read. Over 500 people attended the all-day event including team members, their parents and families, teachers and principals, media, and community members. The NERDS from Porter Middle School won top honors.

We are so thankful to our sponsors. Without them, the event could not have succeeded. We had generous givers of money, time, and goods. Our thanks go out to:
  1. The Wolfson Family Foundation
  2. Ixia
  3. Beyda for Books
  4. Perma-Bound
  5. Target
  6. Lupe Iturriaga of Park Regency Realty
  7. PinMart
  8. Walmart
  9. Follett Library Resources
We also wish to thank the volunteers who served as judges, timekeepers, scorekeepers, food service, set-up, and clean up.

We hope that next year we will be able to meet again for the 2011 Battle of the Books.

Walmart Supports Battle of the Books

Walmart responded to our request for funds with a check for $1000. This money will be used to help feed the 500 people we expect to attend the event.

Our first sponsor

Last week I received a check for $1000 from Ixia, my husband's company. Ixia donates a maximum of $1000 to charities that their employees support with their personal time. Lance volunteered last year at the event, and he will be at our March 20, 2010, event as well. This donation will help us defray expenses associated with the event. Many thanks to Ixia for their help. We appreciate their support of our efforts to foster literacy. It is especially gratifying that in these lean economic times, when there are fewer dollars to go around, that our program was deemed worthy of Ixia's support.

The check has been deposited in the appropriate account at Vista Middle School and earmarked for Battle of the Books.

Warehouse Sale

Thanks to Vista and Millikan MS for donating their dollars. I know Porter and Judy Davis are also going so we should be able to come up with the 244 books we need to give out to BOB participants.
Happy shopping everyone!

This is the date for our big tournament at Vista. We need donors to make it happen: money for food, tees, and prizes. If you would like to donate, or know of a good lead for us, contact Blair Carroll (bolenick@lausd.net) with your information.
